TR-YÖS is the centralized entrance exam for international students applying to Turkish universities. The key fact for 2026: it is not mandatory — it is an additional route. Many universities admit on the diploma alone, while a TR-YÖS score boosts your chances at top-ranked institutions. This guide covers the format, registration process, scoring, and exam-free alternatives.
Who should take TR-YÖS?
The exam is open to foreign citizens, their children over 18, and foreigners who completed secondary school in Turkey. Azerbaijani citizens are eligible. It runs once per academic year (usually May), and scores remain valid for two academic years — one attempt covers two application cycles.
Exam format
| Parameter | Detail |
|---|---|
| Total questions | 80 (Basic Learning Skills 40 + Mathematics 40) |
| Duration | 130 minutes |
| Languages | Turkish, English, German, Arabic, French, Russian |
| Scoring rule | 4 wrong answers cancel 1 correct |
| Score validity | 2 academic years |
The Russian-language variant is a major advantage for Azerbaijani applicants schooled in Russian: math terminology is largely international, so the language barrier is minimal.
Sections and question split
| Section | Questions | Topics |
|---|---|---|
| Basic learning skills | 40 | Logic, pattern recognition, abstract reasoning |
| Mathematics | 40 | Numbers, ratios, algebra, geometry, functions |
Scoring system
TR-YÖS scores are reported out of 500. Wrong answers deduct a quarter of a correct answer, then results are standardized on the 500-point scale. Universities ask for roughly 300–450 depending on the program: medicine and dentistry 430–480, engineering 380–430, other programs 300–380. A 300+ target opens most public university doors.
Registration process and dates
- 1Registration window: typically opens February–March via the ÖSYM system

- 3Payment: exam fee (~550 TL) by bank transfer
- 4Admission ticket: download two weeks before the exam
- 5Exam day: May — test centers in Turkey and select international locations
- 6Results: announced in July; international application period opens August–September
Routes to admission without TR-YÖS
Most international students enter Turkish universities without TR-YÖS. Three routes: direct application (many public and all foundation universities admit on the diploma), GPA-based assessment of your high school record, or a university's own internal test or online interview. The fastest path for Azerbaijani applicants is direct application to public university international quotas — no exam score needed. TR-YÖS remains an additional advantage for elite institutions such as ITU, Boğaziçi and Marmara.
Recommended strategy: secure admission at diploma-based universities first, then add TR-YÖS-based applications to higher-ranked ones. The dual-track approach minimizes risk.
